The woman pleaded guilty to three counts of child cruelty arising from an incident at a house in an undisclosed location in Cork on August 5, 2018.

The three counts involved a charge that the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wilfully neglected a named child in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering to their health or to seriously affect their wellbeing.

Judge Olann Kelleher said that the woman had a prior conviction for child cruelty. The court heard that she previously left her then two children home alone to go drinking.

Girl I know if my mother can do it, baby you can do it. What would you do? if yo son was at home, crying all alone on the bedroom floor, cuz he's hungry and the only way to feed him is to sleep wit a man for a little bit of money, and his daddy's gone somewhere smokin rock now, in and out of lock

The court heard that the woman is addicted to prescription medication and alcohol.

Judge Kelleher said it was the most harrowing case he had dealt with in ten years. ‘This was premeditated…it was a very serious breach of trust that these vulnerable young children suffered.

‘The court must do what it can to protect vulnerable people like these young children.’ He said the sentencing must also serve as a warning and a deterrent to others who may follow suit.

Judge Kelleher said that the children revealed that the woman regularly locked them in their rooms.

‘Her mother would lock the [bedroom] door on most nights even though she begs her not to do so,’ the judge noted one child as having subsequently revealed.

Judge Kelleher said he was cognisant of the woman’s early guilty plea, her genuine and heartfelt remorse and her strenuous efforts to make positive changes in her life. The woman wept and hugged friends before she was led away to start her six-month sentence.
