Irish Rail has received 145 texts from worried passengers since launching its text alert service in August.

The company launched the service on DART and commuter following an increase in customer complaints about anti-social behaviour.

Train users are asked to text the number of their carriage and the problem they are experiencing to a monitored alert system.

According to new figures obtained by the Irish Times, more than a third of the texts from passengers (54 messages) related to anti-social behaviour from teenagers.

Another 42 messages were received about people using drink or drugs on the trains.

Irish Rail received two complaints about sexual harassment and two reports about non-sexual harassment.

There were three complaints about vandalism, three complaints about smoking and two complaints about thefts.

One person complained to Irish Rail about ‘lewd behaviour’ on the train and another person complained about a couple arguing on the train.

A further seven complaints focused on begging and tissue sellers on the trains.

There was also a complaint about someone ‘trying to set something alight’, someone urinating on a DART platform and someone asleep on the train who ‘smelled’.

An Irish Rail spokesperson previously said that the text alert system was being introduced due to an increasing number of complaints regarding customer safety.

‘While the overwhelming majority of journeys on our services occur without incident, we are determined to ensure that we reduce the number of incidents for the benefit of those who travel with us and those who work for us.’
