“She’s locked up for 20 hours a day and only allowed out for four hours, to use the exercise yard or gym and the like.

“Prison staff are trying to facilitate her as best they can and it’s hoped that eventually she will be less restricted.

“There is a prayer room in the jail but she appears to use her cell most or the time.

And the source said that Christmas behind bars can be a very bleak time.

They added: “Contrary to what most people might think, Christmas time is horrible when it comes to visits from family and friends.

“You would imagine that most people would be delighted to see their loved ones but if anything they end up killing each other.

"If anything the inmates go mad if they aren’t brought presents they like or contraband they were hoping would get them through the festive season.

Ms Smith, 37, whose address cannot be published for legal reasons, may yet spend Christmas in jail away from her daughter, 2, if her bail is not processed.The mother of one from Co Louth was granted bail last Thursday and was initially expected to take up bail last Friday. It’s understood the delay surrounds the independent surety, of which €1,000 must be lodged plus €500 of Ms Smith’s own money.
