An elderly woman who had just been discharged from a Dublin hospital was found homeless on the street outside the GPO on O'Connell Street last night.

The woman, who has been engaging with homeless outreach services for almost two years, was helped by Reaching Out for Homeless and councillor Christy Burke.

The woman gave her age to the group as 81, but council outreach workers who have been engaging with her in recent months said she is in her 60s.

Christy Burke has slammed the hospital for discharging the woman back onto the street, and said the council quickly worked to ensure she had a bed for the night in a safe location.

"Irene got a taxi with the woman to the hotel, booked her into the room and made sure she was safe. She went to meet her again this morning.
