Tributes are being paid to the owner of the oldest Irish pub in New York who has died.

Matty Maher, from Kilkenny, owned McSorley’s Old Ale House for nearly 50 years before he died last weekend.

The pub had been opened by Irishman John McSorley in 1854, but it was purchased by Mr Maher in 1977, amid poverty, changing laws and increased drug use in New York, according to reps from the pub.

Ireland's tax system does 'the most in Europe to reduce inequality', says ESRI

Ireland's tax system does 'the most in Europe to reduce inequality', says ESRI The top 10% of households earn more than 2.6 times that of the middle household in 2017 .The report also described how inequality in household take-home pay has declined. Why is it called Old Irish Pub ? There is very little Irish about it. You can get one Irish beer, Guinness. There is a sign over the quiet table in the corner where we were going to sit. It says Céad Míle Fáilte. I bet the bartender or even the owners have no idea how to pronounce the words or what

It's not like an Irish pub is unique in the city but I just popped in here to start the evening off. Down a couple steps off the street

Mr Maher was the subject of a tribute on social media from those who have taken charge of the pub following his death.

The tribute reads: ‘He died peacefully with family and friends by his side singing him Irish melodies.

‘He was fond of saying, “It’s not what you become in life but what you overcome.” He was the light and joy to many.

‘He loved history and all things Irish and knew McSorley’s and the city could survive when so many others told him he was absolutely nuts.

‘All of us who were lucky enough to have known the man will forever be eternally grateful for his generous spirit, and his compassionate understanding and forgiveness in man’s folly.’
