A new grant, which is being paid to 102 schools, will bring the total to €85 available for each pupil - an increase of €64 in support under the existing books grant scheme. The 15,000 pupils involved represent about 3pc of the primary school population. Education Minister Joe McHugh announced the new €1m pilot scheme today.“The aim is to provide school books for these children and their families and we hope to build on this,” the minister said.

An elderly man is fighting for his life after being hit by a car in Co Kerry.

The pensioner, in his 80s, was struck at around 7.10pm on the N72 at Churchview, Rathmore.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses and anyone who may have video footage of the area to come forward.

A spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Millstreet, Co Cork are investigating a serious road traffic collision that occurred this evening, Friday 17th January, 2020.
