Cork Gardai have issued a warning regarding an ongoing mobile phishing scam.

On Sunday night, Gardai received a report from a person in Fermoy who was contacted from an unknown French number.

In their statement, Gardai said: ‘The caller informed his intended victim that they had won €50,000 in a lottery and was looking for bank details to transfer the money. Wisely, no details were given and hanging up is the best response’

Regarding Revenue, Gardai added that it’s highly unlikely that the company will call you to discuss tax rebates.

If a caller asks for your bank details urgently, ‘don’t react’.

Finally, Gardai suggest researching any company or phone number that tries to contact you and take special care to warn vulnerable family members.
