Fine Gael’s proposed new interim pension for 65-year-olds will screw them for €45 a week compared to the regular pension.

Social Protection Minister Regina Doherty announced that a new State Pathway Pension will be introduced for those that have to retire at 65.

But this will be worth far less than the ordinary pension, nearly €45 less a week.

Ms Doherty risks bringing older voters back onto the streets like they did in 2009 when up to 25,000 people marched on Leinster House over proposed medical card changes.

People Before Profit TD Brid Smith was fuming on Friday night when the Irish Mirror told her about the new pension and she is urging retirees to resist the new austerity measure.

The Pathway Pension will be pitched at the same rate as the regular dole, which is currently €203 a week, compared to €248.30 for the State Pension, a difference of almost 25 per cent and €2,400 in a full year.

It is supposed to fix the problem we have currently where anyone retiring at 65 must sign on the Dole for a year before getting the pension proper at 66.

But Fine Gael is committed to raising the retirement age even further in the coming years.

It will go up to 67 next year and Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe confirmed yesterday that we will all have to work until we’re 68 before we can retire from the year 2028

He said: “Yes, this is the law, this is what has been legislated for.”

Fianna Fáil signed up for this too, but now they say they are looking to review it.

Ms Doherty’s proposals are part of what Fine Gael are calling the Golden Years Guarantee.

At the centre of this is a promise, what Ms Doherty termed “a cast-iron guarantee,” that the pension will go up by €25 a week over five years.

“We want to provide further targeted increases to those living alone.

Coast Guard 'may struggle to help in sea emergencies' .
The Coast Guard does not have the capacity to respond to major accidents at sea, including oil spills, a fire on a ferry or a Costa Concordia-type incident in Irish waters. The document, sent to Transport Minister Shane Ross last year, warns there is a risk of lives being lost and "environmental, economic, social and political damage" as a result of potential failures. It said "insufficient capacity within the Coast Guard" means there is a high risk it could not "respond effectively and safely to a major event".
