Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow snow and ice warning for the entire country . The warning is in effect from 11am today until 11am tomorrow. Wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow with localised accumulations, especially on high ground, and icy stretches on roads and footpaths are forecast.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice have been issued for much of Scotland and Northern Ireland as a potential Big Freeze looks set to grip the country . Travel disruption and difficult driving conditions are predicted with snow and ice set to cover much of the area. The alert is in place from 8pm on Monday

Connaught saw the majority of the snow on Monday and even had to cancel flights from Knock airport.

The snowfall was so heavy that flights were brought to a standstill and now a status yellow snow/ice warning is in place for the entire country.

Commuters are being asked to take care when driving, cycling or walking this morning as hazardous conditions such as compacted snow and ice are expected in many areas.

The warning is in place until 12pm on Tuesday but that night doesn’t look to be getting much warmer and many people are taking to Twitter to share their snow snaps.

Along with the countrywide status yellow, a hail, sleet and snow showers advisory warning is in place until 3pm.

Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo were covered in a blanket of snow yesterday with further snow showers expected today.

The expected most-effected areas on Tuesday will be counties in the southwest, west and north.

Airport workers in Knock struggled to clear the runway yesterday as the snow fell and many flights had to be diverted to Dublin.

Many areas are expected to be covered in frost on Tuesday morning as many places will see temperatures dip below -2C.
