Gardai are treating as ‘unexplained’ the death of a two-year-old-child in Waterford city.

It is understood the toddler was rushed to University Hospital Waterford on Tuesday afternoon by the child’s family.

The two year old was taken to ­hospital in a family member’s car at around 2pm.

It is understood the toddler was found unresponsive in its cot. Early tests indicated that the death is not suspicious.

A garda spokesman told Extra.ie when contacted last night: ‘Gardaí are investigating the death of an infant in unexplained circumstances at a domestic premises in Waterford which occurred on Tuesday, February 18, at approximately 2pm.

‘A postmortem is due to be carried out and this will determine the course of the investigation.’

Despite best efforts by medics at Waterford hospital to stabilise the child’s condition, the toddler died a short time later.

A postmortem examination by the State Pathologist’s Office was under way in the capital yesterday.

The nature of the Garda investigation will be determined by the results of the postmortem examination.

A file will also be prepared by gardaí for the Coroner’s Office once all medical reports are completed.
