Why do we avoid facing up to our colonial past? David Nicholson asks whether we fully understand the effect of the colonial process on Māori, in which their land, economy, language and spiritual beliefs were taken from them.  The news last week that the Māori Council wants “racism out” by 2040 raises the question of why we have racism at all in Aotearoa. An important reason is that the history taught in our schools has been seriously deficient. Some parishioners in a Co Sligo diocese have been branded "selfish" for putting pressure on priests to say private masses. Bishop Kevin Doran issued a statement to those in the Diocese of Elphin in Sligo asking people to abide by government guidelines.

The Bishop said a minority of people are asking priests to break the lockdown and say mass to small groups and administer communion. However, the bishop stressed that the catholic church will not be breaking the rules and people should stop pressuring local priests.
