UNION-MIGRANTS-OCEAN-VIKING: Amnesty International relays the call for help from the humanitarian ship Ocean Viking
PARIS (Reuters) - Amnesty International called on Saturday the French government to intervene to unblock the crisis situation on board the Ocean Viking, the humanitarian ship of the association SOS Mediterranean which searches in vain for a port to disembark 180 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean Sea.
"France must intervene with the Italian and Maltese authorities so that people can disembark without delay in a safe port. France must also provide concrete support and commit to welcoming a certain number of these people to put an end to their ordeal that has been going on for too long, "said Amnesty International France president Cécile Coudriou in a statement.

SOS Mediterranean said Friday that the situation on board the ship was "emergency" and recalled that it was facing the rejection of its landing requests by the Italian and Maltese maritime authorities.
"The Ocean Viking has been declared in a state of emergency, the situation on board has deteriorated to the point that the safety of the 180 survivors and the crew can no longer be guaranteed", writes the NGO, evoking in a statement "six suicide attempts by survivors in 24 hours".
SOS Méditerranée stresses that out of the 180 survivors rescued during four separate operations, there are 25 minors, 17 of whom are unaccompanied. One of the two women on board is 5 months pregnant.
After having suspended its action for three months due to the coronavirus epidemic, the Ocean Viking left the port of Marseille on June 22 to resume its rescue operations at sea.
"For years, the life of survivors is in the hands of European states, which, for their part, are dithering to organize a lasting mechanism of solidarity to share the reception of women, children and men ", adds the president of Amnesty International France, who believes that "this lack of will to anticipate is dangerous, even deadly".
