In Ireland, Minister of Health Stephen Donnelly announced that the government intends to vaccinate all of its citizens against Covid-19 by September.

Ireland expects to have vaccinated all its citizens against the new coronavirus by September if vaccine stocks allow, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said Thursday (January 21st).

"We are establishing our (vaccination) program on the basis of a stock of vaccines that would allow every citizen to be vaccinated by September" , the minister told the lower house of parliament.

Coronavirus disease 2019 ( COVID - 19 ) reached Northern Ireland on 27 February 2020. According to the Department of Health, 1,671 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus.

The United Kingdom has become the first Western nation to begin vaccinating its citizens with a Pfizer/BioNTech Covid - 19 shot outside of clinical trials, a landmark moment in the coronavirus pandemic.

A "provisional" and "indicative" schedule

"This is a provisional schedule" and "indicative" , based "on assumptions" which depend on future deliveries of vaccines, some of which are yet to be be approved by the European Union, he told MEPs.

Ireland is yet to publish a daily report on injections of the Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, the only two so far that have been authorized in the country, as in the rest of the EU.

Ireland is 'on the right track'

However, Stephen Donnelly said that last Sunday 94,000 people received their first dose of the vaccine. According to him, Ireland is "on track" for having vaccinated 140,000 inhabitants by the end of the week.

According to the latest official figures, Ireland has 2,768 deaths from the novel coronavirus, out of a population of five million.

A third lockdown in effect until the end of the month

After going through the first two waves of the pandemic with a low number of cases and deaths, the country recently reached the highest rate of infection per capita in world, according to data from the University of Oxford.

Faced with this situation, the Irish government has chosen to impose a third lockdown on the country at least until the end of January, during which non-essential shops, pubs, restaurants and schools must remain closed.
