Ireland RKI study on the spread of corona through vacation travel
“Curious” behavior: Criticism of Laschet's statement of “invented limit values”
CDU boss Armin Laschet met with criticism from the SPD and the Greens with skeptical statements about the importance of corona incidence figures. "Anyone who, like Laschet, speaks of 'invented limit values' is destroying trust in the Corona measures," wrote SPD parliamentary group vice Katja Mast on Tuesday on the Internet service Twitter. © dpa Armin Laschet SPD general secretary Lars Klingbeil accuses Laschet of a dodging course in the corona pandemic.
Taking vacation during the pandemic - that was last year and is frowned upon to this day. It says in the room that one would contribute to the spread of the virus. A study by the RKI has now examined the extent to which vacation trips played a role in the past summer. The details.
A study by the(RKI) shows that travelers from vacation came home comparatively rarely with a corona infection. In the study, the influence of travel on the infection rate in summer 2020 was examined, with "travel-associated Covid-19 infections" related to school holidays, travel activities and test capacities. Specifically, it was about corona cases that were recorded in midsummer before autumn 2020, during the "summer holiday wave".
fact check: FFP2 masks in the open air - useful or nonsensical?
© Kira Hofmann / dpa-Zentralbild / dpa Experts agree: The risk of corona infection is much higher indoors than in the fresh air. Some people wear a mask outside as a precaution against the coronavirus. What is mandatory in shops and public transport is noticeable in parks and in the forest. Does it still make sense? When the sun shines and the temperatures climb, people are driven out of the house.
The result of the RKI study: Highly frequent corona infections during this period, for example in North Rhine-Westphalia, could not be attributed to vacation trips. The triggers were mostly other events, such as the corona outbreak in a meat factory in Gütersloh.

Another result: Classic holiday trips seem to be less of a problem. According to the RKI study, there were numerous proven corona infections among travelers returning. The travelers, however, often came from countries like Kosovo, Croatia or Turkey. In connection with these countries, the RKI speaks of "exposure countries (...) from which seasonal and contract workers come to Germany (e.g. Romania and Bulgaria) and the home countries of immigrants (e.g. Turkey and Kosovo)."
However, popular holiday countries also played, in particular Spain and France, according to the RKI, play a role. The number of infections among travelers returning from these countries is significantly lower, but both countries were classified as risk areas relatively late. Corona tests were therefore not mandatory for a long time.
Nevertheless, the travel industry sees the RKI's corona study as a positive sign for the coming holiday season. In response to the study, the President of the German Travel Association DRV, Norbert Fiebig, called for “the gradual development of a restart concept for tourism.”
