A pedestrian is in hospital after being struck by a fire engine that was responding to a 999 call, police say.

The pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit on Towcester Road, Northampton.

Northamptonshire Police said they were called to reports of a serious road traffic collision at about 7.20pm on Wednesday.

The road remained closed throughout the evening and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

Northamptonshire Police has urged any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone who saw the collision or has any information regarding it can call police on 101.
