Police in Texas are investigating after a shark was stolen from her tank at the San Antonion Aquarium in Texas.

Helen the horn shark became the subject of concern after she was lifted from her open tank, wrapped in a blanket, and placed in a pram as thieves tried to make off with her, disguising her as a baby.

Security footage from the aquarium shows how a man in a tshirt made his way around the tank trying to capture her, before eventually managing to remove her from the pool of water.

Assisted by another man, the duo appear back on camera moments later, with the shark wrapped up in the blanket.

A woman, who appears to be holding a baby, steps away from the pram allowing the second man to place the shark into it, before the three thieves exit the area.

However, the trio were spotted by a member of staff who noticed something unusual going on, and a manager at the aquarium confronted the group in the car park.

One of the men managed to escape, driving off with the shark.

Law enforcement officers were contacted and a social media campaign was launched, leading to the quick recovery of Helen who was in the possession of one of the thieves.

A statement from the aquarium read: ‘The 16-inch-long horn shark was stolen from our tide pool exhibit while the attendant was assisting other guests. The suspects staked out the pool for more than an hour to wait for this opportunity.

‘After grabbing the shark they entered into one of our filter rooms where they poured the bucket of bleach solution that employees used for the disinfection of tools into our cold water exhibit filtration system, causing harm to other wildlife.

‘If it weren’t for the fast acting experienced staff, the bleach would have done more damage. They then used the sanitation bucket to aide in transportation of the shark into the stroller and hurried up the stairs and out to the parking lot.’

Two of the suspects have since confessed to the theft as police decide whether or not to charge a third suspected accomplice.

Helen the horn shark is recovering well in quarantine.
