Mr Diess used the phrase "Ebit macht frei", echoing the infamous words "Arbeit macht frei" ("work sets you free") emblazoned on the gates of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

He said he was "extremely sorry" if he had caused offence and acknowledged the "special historical responsibility" of Volkswagen, which has its roots in the Third Reich
