Fugitive Joseph McCann, who is wanted in connection with a number of rapes and abductions of women, is believed to be in a standoff with police.

Cheshire police, who were looking for McCann after two women were kidnapped, say they have "located a man in connection with the incident".

They added: "The man has been secured by officers in a rural area of Congleton and is currently talking to trained negotiators."

McCann, who has been described by police as "extremely dangerous", is thought to be connected to the abduction of two women on Sunday in Cheshire.

The 34-year-old was already being hunted by the Met Police after the abduction and "horrific" rapes of three women in London.

On Sunday, McCann is suspected of being involved in two women being forced into a black Fiat Punto in Congleton town centre, Cheshire, at around 6.45pm.

The suspect, realising he had been spotted, hit a car as he attempted to flee. Running away on foot, the women were left in the car. They are unhurt but "extremely shaken".

Police had been checking roads in and out of Congleton and boosted numbers of officers are on the streets. They warned anyone who sees him not to approach him.

Police have issued a warning following the death of a 15-year-old girl who is believed to have taken MDMA. The girl collapsed in a car park in Northallerton at around 9.30pm on Saturday. She died later in hospital. Police are still trying to determine whether MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, led to the girl's death. They warned anyone who has recently bought the drug to be cautious. Detective Inspector Jon Sygrove of North Yorkshire Police said: "This is an incredibly sad and tragic event and police enquiries are ongoing to determine the events around the girl's death.
