Trump Increases China Tariffs as Trade Deal Hangs in the Balance

Trump Increases China Tariffs as Trade Deal Hangs in the Balance WASHINGTON — President Trump escalated his trade war with China on Friday morning, raising tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods and taking steps to tax nearly all of China’s imports as punishment for what he said was Beijing’s attempt to “renegotiate” a trade deal. Mr. Trump’s decision to proceed with the tariff increase came after a pivotal round of trade talks in Washington on Thursday night failed to produce an agreement to forestall the higher levies. The White House said talks would resume again on Friday but it remains uncertain whether the two sides can bridge the differences that have arisen over the past week.

The rabble-rousing statements come amid an intense escalation of the trade war over the past week. Here's what happened:

  • On Friday, May 10, Trump increased tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, from 10% to 25%. Here are all the Chinese products that will get hit.
  • On Monday, May 13, China retaliated by saying that it would raise duties on $60 billion worth of American goods from June 1, with new duties of 5% to 25%. Here are the American goods that will be affected.
  • Later that day, the US Trade Representative's Office published a list of about $300 billion worth of Chinese imports, noting that it proposes to slap tariffs of up to 25% on those products. Those goods include live purebred breeding horses, meat, condensed milk, tobacco, canoe paddles, and pieces of clothing.

If the Trump administration were to impose the new tariffs on $300 billion of additional goods it would mean that $500 billion of Chinese goods coming into the US would be subject to tariffs.

Public toilet shortage threatens nation's health, report warns.
A lack of public toilets in the UK is forcing many people to stay at home, threatening the health and mobility of the nation, a report has warned. More than 700 council-run facilities have closed since 2010, according to the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH). Its survey found three in four adults (74%) believe there are not enough toilets in their area and one in five (20%) said a lack of facilities deters them from leaving home as often as they would like. Public toilets are not merely 'nice to have'.
