Seventeen migrants in two boats were brought to Dover after crossing the Channel on Sunday. At least two more boats carrying suspected migrants have been intercepted by Border Force officials crossing the English Channel to Kent .

Six boats carrying 90 migrants have been intercepted off the Kent coast . The Home Office said 79 men and 11 women had crossed the Channel on Saturday 16 May on small boats. A spokesman said the migrants travelled from France and were taken to Dover, where they were medically assessed.

The groups were handed over to immigration officials.

At 4am on Sunday morning, Border Force was alerted to a small boat that was in UK waters and heading towards Dover.

13 people were recovered - six men, two women and five children - who all claimed to be from Iraq and Iran.

A further incident at 9am saw another 19 people intercepted by the Border Force boats.

All the people found were medically assessed and said to be well, and are now with immigration figures for interview.

In a statement, the Home Office said: "Anyone crossing the Channel in a small boat is taking a huge risk with their life and the lives of their children.

Dave Hearne has been honoured on several occasions for his role in a number of dramatic water rescues , was brought to the surface in critical condition by colleagues. He was airlifted to Waterford Regional Airport but was pronounced dead despite attempts to resuscitate him. Garda and rescue colleagues in Waterford are understood to be shocked at the death of the family man, who was highly respected amongst colleagues and the local community.
