According to prosecutors, the pair took advantage of hook-ups and dates which they arranged through dating apps to steal their property and take photographs of bank cards.
They also claimed the alleged fraudsters drugged a number of their targets or spiked their drinks, while one victim had drugs injected into his backside without his consent.
The court heard Mr Michels was amicably divorced in 2010 and had a number of long-term relationships since coming out as gay, but had recently felt lonely.
The 54-year-old invited Matovu to his home in south-west London for sex after visiting Ku Bar and G-A-Y Bar in Soho on the evening of 16 August last year.
It is claimed Matovu then drugged Mr Michels and took photographs of his bank cards, driver's licence and other personal information while he was dead or unconscious.

The younger man then took a taxi to Dunbar's address with a suitcase and bottles of alcohol.
Family members discovered Mr Michels' body in his bed the following day and an empty 3ml syringe without a needle attached was found on the floor.
Jurors heard that DNA from the victim and defendant, as well as traces of GHB, were identified on the syringe.
The prosecution said Matovu "intended to cause (Mr Michels) really serious bodily harm by rendering him deeply, and dangerously, unconscious so he could steal property from him and take photographs of his bank cards and other documents containing his personal details".
Matovu admitted going home with Mr Michels to have consensual sex, but denies murder and administering GHB to Mr Michels, claiming he took it of his own free will.
The court was told that of the 12 alleged victims, nine met both defendants while three only saw Matovu.
