Johnson threatens to refuse to pay £39bn to EU if he becomes PM

Johnson threatens to refuse to pay £39bn to EU if he becomes PM Boris Johnson has set his sights on the prize after claiming only he can see off both Nigel Farage and Jeremy Corbyn as he urged Tory MPs and party members to make him their next leader and prime minister. The leadership campaign frontrunner, who is up against the likes of Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt and Dominic Raab, has claimed he would refuse to pay the promised £39bn to the European Union unless better Brexit terms are on offer. He added that he would step up preparations to counter no-deal "disruption", and told the Sunday Times that he could defeat the twin threat posed by the Brexit Party and Labour leaders.

On Tuesday night the candidates will face questioning in a televised BBC debate.

Five of the six candidates will make it through Tuesday unscathed - one will be given the boot as Tory MPs vote on the second round of the leadership race.

In Tuesday's ballot, any candidate who fails to receive 33 votes is automatically knocked out of the contest. If all six clear that hurdle, then the contender placed last is excluded.

In the first round last week, Mr Johnson picked up 114 votes. Trailing in his wake were Mr Hunt on 43, Michael Gove on 37, Dominic Raab on 27, Sajid Javid on 23 and Mr Stewart on 19.
