The Vatican will open two tombs later this month to help solve the case of a teenager missing for 36 years.

Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican employee, went missing in 1983 at the age of 15 after failing to return from a music lesson.

On Tuesday, the Vatican said the decision to open the tombs followed a request from her family.

Spokesman Alessandro Gisotti said Emanuela's relatives, lawyers for the family and the Holy See will be present when the graves are opened on 11 July in the Teutonic Cemetery within Vatican property.

Pietro Orlandi, Emanuela's brother, told the ANSA news agency: "After 35 years of lack of co-operation, the start of an investigation is an important breakthrough."

Last summer, the Orlandi family received an anonymous tip about where Emanuela might be buried.

The tip was in a letter sent to the family's lawyer and showed a picture of a tomb in the small German cemetery, instructing them to search the area.

Since her disappearance, Emanuela's relatives have regularly appeared on television and in newspapers pleading for answers.

Most Italians believe the teenager was murdered, possibly in connection to financial scandals surrounding the Catholic church in the early 1980s. Her father worked at the Vatican Bank.

Another theory is that she was kidnapped in an attempt to secure the freedom of a gunman jailed for trying to assassinate Pope John Paul II.

Some also thought the case could be connected to the grave of Enrico De Pedis, a mobster buried in Rome, but no evidence was found when his tomb was opened in 2012.

Emanuela would be 51 years old if she was alive today.
