Alert level increased at world's largest volcano in Hawaii

Alert level increased at world's largest volcano in Hawaii Federal officials raised the alert level Tuesday for the world's largest active volcano, Hawaii's Mauna Loa, which last erupted in 1984. The U.S. Geological Survey changed the level from "normal" to "advisory" following a steady increase in earthquakes and ground swelling that began in March. An eruption is not imminent, but scientists are closely monitoring Mauna Loa because of its reputation for "evolving very quickly" and sending lava far and wide, USGS research geophysicist Ingrid Johanson told The Associated Press in a phone interview last month.

LOS ANGELES - Damage to the earth's crust from the 6.4 and 7.1 magnitude earthquakes that struck Southern California last week is visible in a kaleidoscopic satellite image released by NASA.

The Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, used satellite data to produce a map showing ruptures and displacements not visible to the naked eye - employing technology that has been developed over the last quarter century. The imagery was acquired on July 8 and compared with data from April 8.

The earthquakes were the largest to hit California in nearly 20 years and were felt as far away as Phoenix and Mexicali, Mexico. The temblors and the thousands of aftershocks that followed did not lead to major structural damage near the Ridgecrest epicenter, but did have residents of nearby Trona, Calif. - worrying about their town's future.

Authorities are investigating whether the death of a man 95 miles away in Pahrump, Nev., was tied to the earthquake. The man was pinned under a Jeep after the vehicle fell off its jacks following the quake.

6.9 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California

6.9 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Friday night, the second in less than two days.

A new rupture in Earth ' s crust caused by a magnitude-7.1 earthquake near Ridgecrest , California, is seen in these before-and-after views, captured on July 4 and The quakes damaged some buildings near the epicenter but apparently caused no serious injuries, according to the Los Angeles Times.

And it' s nowhere close to the roadway damage Alaska had to deal with after a 7.0 magnitude quake struck in December. Reactions from Ridgecrest residents ranged from fun to horrifying. So while we've seen a few structure fires there due to broken gas lines, personal items rattled from shelves or

On the NASA map, each color of the psychedelic-looking image represents 4.8 inches of ground displacement. Linear color lines indicate where an area was cracked open or was disturbed.

"One of the things that we want to know after an earthquake happens is which fault moved and how far it moved. So, by using these satellite images, we can determine where the fault is, what lengths of the fault slipped in the earthquake and which fault moved the most. That allows us to better understand where future earthquakes could happen," said JPL's Eric Fielding.

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting from a sudden release of energy in the Earth ' s lithosphere that creates seismic waves.

Homeowners Benny and Anna Sue Eldridge, husband and wife, are currently sleeping outside the home with other family members on mattresses and in trucks for safety. Firefighters told them a stronger earthquake could cause the house to collapse. Anna Sue's father constructed the home with Benny's help in 1961. It once took a year to obtain such satellite images, as was the case when capturing the impact of the 7.3 magnitude Landers earthquake in the Mojave Desert in 1992. But Fielding said that since 2016, images can arrive within three to four days.

The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency provided the data to produce the map. NASA is building its own radar satellite at JPL. When it launches in roughly three years, Fielding said, the technology will be able to "map the whole Earth every 12 days."

What would alien life mean for Catholicism? The Vatican’s chief astronomer explains..
He also digs into Galileo, icy moons, and the relationship between science and religion. High on Mount Graham in Arizona, tucked into a forest of trees, there’s a telescope. It’s one of several at the Mount Graham International Observatory. But this one is especially concerned with the heavens; it’s operated by the Vatican Observatory. Yes, the Roman Catholic Church has its own astronomical observatory. The Vatican’s astronomical institution dates back to at least 1891, and shows that the church is an active participant in the scientific world.
