Drivers using a motorway around Bristol are being warned about the danger of smoke after the fire at the Premier Inn near Cribbs Causeway.

The enormous blaze has sent plumes of thick black smoke into the air, reducing visibility on the M5. It is especially bad near the Cribbs Causeway shopping centre, on the outskirts of the city.

Firefighters from across Somerset have been battling the fire since Wednesday afternoon and roads have been closed.

Avon and Somerset Police declared it a "major incident" because of the level of resources needed by the emergency services at a time when they were already stretched following the Extinction Rebellion protests in the city.

Local residents are still being advised on Thursday to keep their windows and doors closed where possible.
