The Robot Ship Set to Cross the Atlantic and Change the World

The Robot Ship Set to Cross the Atlantic and Change the World The blocky, 36-foot-long, yellow- and white-striped vessel bobbing off the coast of the United Kingdom sure doesn’t look like much. But Maxlimer just might be the most important ship in the world right now. Maxlimer is totally robotic. And it’s poised to be the first unmanned surface vessel, or USV, to cross the Atlantic. The journey could prove the case for a host of new oceangoing drones: crewless cargo ships; unmanned oil tankers; robotic work boats. <br _moz_dirty="" /> But don’t hold your breath. Widespread adoption could take years or even decades.

In the years following the Mayflower's arrival in 1620, migrants to the United States would swap folk songs around camp fires, sharing cultures and creating new musical hybrids.

Now, researchers have found out that humpback whales are doing pretty much the same thing, although their renditions are strictly a cappella, with not a fiddle or banjo in sight.

A new study looked at the songs being sung the Kermadec Islands in the South Pacific, a recently discovered migratory stopover for humpback whales, and compared them to ones being performed in a number of wintering locations, from New Caledonia to the Cook Islands.

It finds that the whales teach and learn songs as they come into contact with others during migration - and they even bolt on bits of other songs to create new ones.

Tampa (AFP) - Humpback whales are famous for their eerie, underwater songs . Since ocean noise has been on the rise in recent decades, some experts said the findings raise new questions about what other whale behaviors might be changing due to mounting human presence on the high seas.

Whales can learn songs

"Song themes from multiple wintering grounds matched songs recorded at the Kermadecs, including a hybrid of two songs," said Luke Rendell, of the University of St Andrews.

"This suggests that multiple humpback whale populations from across the South Pacific are travelling past these islands and song learning may be occurring," he said.

The research is published in the journal Open Science.

Ellen Garland, also of St Andrews, added: "Male humpback whales perform complex, culturally transmitted song displays. Our research revealed the migration patterns of humpback whales appear to be written into their songs."

The humpback whale is a species of baleen whale, whose adults range in length from 12–16 metres and weigh about 30 tonnes. The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head.

The study comes after researchers last year found that male humpback whales reduce or cease their songs in reaction to shipping noise.

Increasing shipping activity is causing a rise in low-frequency ocean noise, according to that study, published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Baleen whales use low-frequency sound to communicate, so this human-made noise could affect their singing behavior.

In that study, researchers used two underwater recorders to capture whalesong and locations of animals and examined the effect on humpback singing of the noise of the passing ship, the only large boat travelling in this remote area.

The research is according to a study published in October last year in the open-access journal PLOS ONE, by Koki Tsujii from Ogasawara Whale Watching Association and Hokkaido University, Japan, and colleagues.
