An American woman has been charged with human trafficking in the Philippines after allegedly trying to smuggle a six-day-old baby out of the country in a shoulder bag.

Jennifer Talbot was stopped by airline staff at a boarding gate at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila on Wednesday evening after reportedly being caught with the newborn boy in a bag, authorities have said.

The 43-year-old Ohio native had passed through immigration without declaring the baby.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in the Philippines said Talbot later handed over a statement that she claimed was proof of permission from the baby's mother that she could take her newborn to the US.

But the bureau said the statement was not signed by the mother, and the government had not issued travel approval for the child.

Manny Dimaano, the NBI's head of international airport investigation division, said on Thursday that investigators believed Ms Talbot had "an intention to conceal" the baby due to the way she was carrying the bag.

He said: "Based on the instruction on the bag, it should be carried in front and the head of the baby should be in an upright position so you could see the baby.  But it was not carried that way so there was really an intention to conceal and to sneak out the baby and that is why she was able to pass through security."
