Unsure where Hurricane Dorian is going to land over Labor Day weekend, many Florida residents faced a sense of helplessness as they prepared for what President Donald Trump said could be an "absolute monster" of a storm.
Conditions have " rapidly " deteriorated in the Caribbean since the tropical cyclone hit earlier this week, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless and damage of around bn (£2.4bn) to insured property. The official number of dead - 43 - is also expected to rise as the situation becomes clearer.

Dorian strikes Bahamas with record fury as Category 5 storm
Hurricane Dorian struck the northern Bahamas as a catastrophic Category 5 storm Sunday, its record 185 mph (297 kph) winds ripping off roofs, overturning cars and tearing down power lines as hundreds hunkered down in schools, churches and shelters. Dorian slammed into Elbow Cay in Abaco island at 12:40 p.m., and then made a second landfall near Marsh Harbour at 2 p.m., after authorities made last-minute pleas for those in low-lying areas to evacuate. "It's devastating," said Joy Jibrilu, director general of the Bahamas' Ministry of Tourism and Aviation. "There has been huge damage to property and infrastructure.

Why Storms Like Hurricane Dorian Are So Hard to Predict
When hurricanes form, meteorologists like me bring out beautiful maps with precise detail. The hurricane’s forecast track even has a line down the middle. And yet, as has been proven this week with Hurricane Dorian, there’s a whole lot about hurricane forecasting we still don’t know. The Windward Islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were scared then spared. We’re not sure yet, but that’s probably going to be the case for Florida too. This is not a question of whether forecasters can work harder or put in more hours.
HURRICANE DORIAN is now the strongest hurricane of 2019 as it continues to batter the Bahamas before hitting the east coast of the US. Hurricane Dorian has become the strongest storm in modern records to hit the northwestern Bahamas.
