A man has been charged in connection with the deaths of a mother and her young son 43 years ago - bringing Britain's longest-running missing persons case closer to a conclusion.

Renee MacRae, 36, from Inverness, disappeared with three-year-old Andrew in November 1976.

A 77-year-old man was arrested in the north of England and is due to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court later today, Police Scotland said.

Ms MacRae had left Inverness to travel south to see her sister in Kilmarnock. Her burnt out BMW was found in a lay-by south of Inverness but there was no trace of her or Andrew.

In recent months, police have drained Leanach Quarry outside Inverness as they search for clues, retrieving a number of items.

But the bodies of Ms MacRae and her son have not been recovered.

Previously, police launched a cold case review of the pair's disappearance and released an image of a Silver Cross pram, similar to the one used by Ms MacRae.

Detective Inspector Brian Geddes said: "This is a significant development in an investigation which started when Renee and Andrew disappeared in November 1976.

"Police officers and staff from across the country, as well as a number of partner agencies and contractors, have put an enormous amount of work into this investigation from 1976 to the present day, allowing us to reach this point.
