Holidaymakers travelling to Spain are being urged to be vigilant as the country recovers from severe flooding.

The advice from The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has been issued after extreme weather battered many parts of the country last week, including popular tourist destinations.

The Mediterranean coastal regions of Valencia, Murcia and eastern Andalucia were faced with a tornado, storms and torrential rain last Thursday, September 12.

It led to devastating flash floods, with the army drafted in to assist police and fire services in rescue operations.

The devastating weather saw some towns record their highest rainfall on record and the storm was the worst to hit eastern Spain in 140 years, according to local news outlets.

Officials assure that the worst of the weather has now passed with extreme weather warnings no longer in place.

Parts of the Costa Blanca however remain in ruin as clean-up operations continue to salvage the region, as reported by the Manchester Evening News .

The 41-year-old told the Evening News: "It's just been absolutely awful. We have known some torrential rain but nothing like this.

"We know one family who are still trapped upstairs in their villa waiting to be rescued."

Ms Cross said that the situation is "definitely still critical" in some parts of the country.

The FCO has issued travel warnings to British tourists planning to visit Spain, which they continue to promote.

It states that "the extreme weather alert issued by Spain's meteorological office (AEMET) has now been lifted."

However, "damage caused by flash flooding continues to affect some areas in the south of the Alicante and Murcia regions, causing some disruption to local transport and secondary road closures."

The FCO warns holidaymakers and locals in these areas to be vigilant and "follow the advice of local authorities."
