An episode of Grand Designs has been called the saddest ever after a man plunged almost £4million into debt and saw his family break up as he struggled - and failed - to build a house on the edge of a cliff in North Devon.

Edward White started trying to build a massive luxury home on the top of a cliff in Chesil Beach, North Devon in 2012 but today it stands half finished.

He has borrowed more than £3million so far for the project and has completed one home further down the cliff - which he is unable to sell because it is on a building site, reports DevonLive.

The 'grand designs' of the project meant that the luxury home boasted circular tower 'lighthouse' as well as a 'glass edge' infinity swimming pool.

Owner Edward White described the house, which he borrowed £1.8million to convert, was a little boy's dream," but his wife had a different view, labelling it a "nightmare" after it plunged the pair deep into debt.

This included a whopping £200,000 on triple-glazed windows and the building of a separate property, called The Eye, which they tried to sell, without success, to try and fund the rest of the project.

Kevin Mcloud returned in September 2019, which was seven years after they started and two years since his previous visit, but there was disappointment.

The building had become an 'eyesore' according to locals and now required a further £2million to finish it.

While The Eye was a centrepiece, health and safety issues with the building site next door meant that it couldn't be sold off and no-one could live in it.

The strain of getting the property finished had taken it's toll on the owners, who had split up as the stress mounted. His children, who were supposed to live in the dream home, are now grown up.

Edward revealed that he had appealed to angry residents for further patience as he endeavoured to get Chesil Cliff House finished.

While another shared: "I don't mind the house, just it's location. It's not too intrusive from the road but from Saunton beach it's a total eyesore in my opinion."

Edward is now planning to borrow more money to finish the scheme - which he estimates wil ltake another £2million.

But people reacting to the episode on Twitter weren't all as optimistic as Edward.

One person said: "Is it just the recession that made banks say no or the building on the edge of a cliff face?"

Another noted: "I want to borrow £1.8 million to knock down a £1.4 million house and build another, on a cliff that's falling into the sea."

The moody music, unfinished home and separation led one commenter to describe it as "the saddest episode (of Grand Designs) ever"
