a man wearing a suit and tie © PA Wire/PA Images Tory MPs have been accused of a “shocking lack of awareness” after jeering Jeremy Corbyn for wearing a green tie to honour the victims of the Grenfell tower fire – in front of survivors and families sat the Commons public gallery.

The Labour leader wore the tie while awaiting a statement from Boris Johnson on the official inquiry into the disaster, which reported on Wednesday.

Theresa May, who was prime minister when the June 2017 fire claimed the lives of 72 people, rebuked fellow Tories for jeering, reportedly telling them “it’s about Grenfell”.

The incident forced Corbyn to pause during his opening contribution at prime minister’s questions to tell Tories: “It’s alright, it’s alright I know you’re all jealous of my tie but it’s okay.”

Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner, who was in the chamber, said: “Tory backbenchers jeering Jeremy Corbyn for the colour of his green tie! It’s about respect for Grenfell.
