A former cold case detective is appealing for witnesses who may hold vital clues over what happened to tragic Jo Jo Dullard to come forward.

As the 23rd anniversary of her disappearance approaches, Alan Bailey believes a serious sex offender abducted Jo Jo – and others were in the car at the time.

The retired officer, who headed up the Serious Crime Review Team, told the Irish Sunday Mirror the 21-year-old may have been taken by a man known to Gardai.

The cold case team held the theory that he was travelling in a convoy of two cars from Dublin to Waterford on the night the young waitress disappeared.

a person in a yellow truck on the street: The front of a city bus is up in the air after a sinkhole opened under it during rush hour in downtown Pittsburgh on October 28, 2019. The Port Authority of Allegheny County says only the driver and one passenger were aboard the bus when it plunged into the hole. The passenger was taken to a hospital for a minor injury and the driver was uninjured.

Mr Bailey said there is a high possibility Jo Jo got into a car with two people as she was seen getting into the back of the car rather than the front passenger seat.

He is making an appeal for anyone who may have been in the vehicle with the prime suspect but was not directly involved to come forward and end her family’s pain ahead of the anniversary of her disappearance next Saturday. Mr Bailey said: “There have been no developments in the case, there’s been absolutely nothing.

“At the time a certain serious sex offender from Waterford was the prime suspect who was allegedly in the area on the night and picked her up in his car. There was a lot of talk about Larry Murphy at the time but it’s a different guy completely. Nothing ever tied in with Murphy in this case.

Attack on a 17-year-old girl a year before the first of the murders in Perth suburb could offer a breakthrough in the long-running case , former detective says .

“This suspect had previous convictions for sex offences and would have been questioned at the time.

“An informant came forward with information about this sex offender travelling in convoy in a car, that she was in one car with a number of people and this sex offender was in a car in front with another male person.

“There may not be any truth in it but it’s worth appealing for information on again.”

Jo Jo, who was last seen in Moone, Co Kildare, had been in Dublin but missed the last bus home to Callan, Co Kilkenny, and instead hitched a lift to Naas and another to Moone.

On the night she disappeared she called a friend from a phone box in the quiet south Kildare village and said a car had pulled up. She was never heard from again.

Mr Bailey said: “The story goes that Jo Jo was thumbing a lift and leaning half in to the phone box and the car pulled up.

“Any witnesses who observed her getting into the car always mentioned that she got into the back which would tie in with two people being in it at least. The story was that this sex offender then brought her to an area down in Co Waterford and again bearing in mind that a year after she disappeared there was a sighting reported to gardai that a girl had been seen trying to escape from a car outside of Waterford City and been dragged back into the car. The one description that jelled with us was that the girl was barefoot.
