New Zealand police have confirmed one person is dead, and say they fear the death toll may rise, after a devastating volcanic eruption on the country's White Island.

More than 20 people are still missing after the eruption, which happened at 2:11pm local time and sent plumes of white smoke and debris high into the sky.

Just one minute before that webcam footage had captured what appeared to be people walking inside the volcano crater.

Authorities said fewer than 50 people had been on the island at the time of the explosion, revising down an earlier estimate of around 100.

Twenty-three people have been taken off the island on boats. Authorities say "most of them" have suffered burns.

However many are still unaccounted for and there are fears of multiple fatalities.

"I can confirm there is one fatality, and based on the information we have there is likely to be more," National Operation Commander Deputy Commissioner John Tims said

"There are 27 people potentially still on the island."

a person riding a wave on top of a mountain: Since the Earth was formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago, it has gone through dozens of major cataclysmic events, including the eruption of supervolcanoes, impacts by comets and asteroids, major tectonic shifts, exposure to cosmic radiation, and more. Most of these took place long before homo sapiens ever walked the Earth. Some of these events were so violent that they directly ushered in new geologic periods. These were often accompanied by ice ages, mass extinction events, or conversely warming and ecological flourishing. These periods left lasting, major changes to the planet’s species, continental structure, and atmospheric composition.  For those concerned about the looming threat of global climate change, these events, many of which are now millions of years old, bear grim relevance to today.  The major extinction events that occurred since life began on Earth, in the majority of cases, share a few attributes, including major changes in CO2 levels and other gases like methane and sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere and an increase in ocean acidification, which can result from higher CO2 levels.  Since the Industrial Revolution, both carbon concentration in the atmosphere and ocean acidification are increasing at far faster levels than can be explained by cyclical changes. Ocean acidity has increased by 30%, and CO2 levels have roughly doubled compared to preindustrial levels, and the result is the endangerment of tens of thousands of species. These are the animals humans are driving to extinction. Currently, the planet’s flora and fauna are dying at a much faster rate than is normal in nature. Scientists have warned we could be in the midst of a sixth major extinction event, which unlike previous extinction events is caused by human activity and could worsen if human-related greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked. These are the 26 climate crisis disasters that will get worse if we do nothing.  To compile a list of the largest geological forces in Earth’s history, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed publications in scientific journals focusing on cataclysmic events in Earth’s history that resulted in sudden, abrupt, and massive environmental impacts. For each event where the date of occurrence can only be estimated, we list the rough number of years it is believed to have occurred before today, and for events where the exact year of the occurrence is known, the year is written out with A.D. notation.

No details about the nationalities of those involved have been released.

"At this stage, it is too dangerous for police and rescue services to go to the island," Mr Tims said.

"However, we continue to assess the conditions which would allow us to go onto the island. The island is currently covered in ash and volcanic material. We are taking expert advice with regards to the safety of any rescue attempt."

A volcano has erupted suddenly on New Zealand ’ s White Island , about 30 miles from the east coast of North Island , provoking fears for tourists in the area. Local media are reporting people were injured after the island in Bay of Plenty erupted , sending massive plumes of steam and debris into the air.

Footage Mr Schade posted to Twitter showed wild scenes as smoke billowed from the crater and helicopters he described as "destroyed" sat in the foreground.

"My god, White Island volcano in New Zealand erupted today for first time since 2001," Mr Schade tweeted.

"Our whole tour group were literally standing at the edge of the main crater not 30 minutes before."

He then described how his mother tended to an injured woman in the boat taking them off the island.

St John Ambulance director of operations Norma Lane told Newstalk ZB as many as seven helicopters were heading to the island.

"We're expecting burns, there could be respiratory issues, there could be head injuries, fractures, et cetera from rocks or stones, we really don't know at this stage. This is an incident that is still evolving and we're still waiting to get the reports from the clinicians on the scene," Ms Lane said, according to the NZ Herald.

GeoNet, New Zealand's geological hazard information centre, describes White Island, also known as Whakaari, as New Zealand's most active cone volcano.

About 70 per cent of it is under the sea.

Twelve people were killed on the island in 1914 when it was being mined for sulphur. Part of a crater wall collapsed and a landslide destroyed the miners' village and the mine itself.

The remains of buildings from another mining enterprise in the 1920s are now a tourist attraction, according to GeoNet.

The island became a private scenic reserve in 1953, and daily tours allow more than 10,000 people to visit the volcano every year.

Geonet, raised its alert level to four for a "moderate" volcanic eruption and the country's aviation code has been raised to orange amid concerns about the impact on flights.

A volcanic ash advisory has also been issued for the surrounding area.
