If the thought of cycling through the winter weather appeals to you but having to don bulky gloves is putting you off, Halfords may have the answer to your prayers.

The British retailer claims to have created the world's first bicycle with heated handlebars, the Carrera Subway Winter Bike.

Thanks to heating elements under the rubber of the handlebar grip, the handles are capable of heating up to 40 degrees celsius at the push of a button.

The battery itself is held internally inside the bar and controlled and charged from the outside through a standard micro USB port.

A single charge heats the handles for up to two hours, the company claimed, in a bid to stave off chilly hands while riding in cold conditions.

The bike, which also sports a reflective frame, fitted mudguards and puncture-resistant tyres, is available to buy in selected Halfords shops and through its website for £400.

"Whether for commuting or training, we know that cycling in the colder months can be a challenge," Justin Stevenson, Halfords' chief bike designer, said.

"We wanted to make it easier for riders to stay on their bike, so we developed the Carrera Subway Winter bike –  the world’s first bike to feature heated handlebar grips and means cyclists can say goodbye to numb and cold hands."

Fears grow for babies as 73 pregnant women are hit with flu

Fears grow for babies as 73 pregnant women are hit with flu At least 73 pregnant women had flu when attending the country's three main maternity hospitals this winter, forcing many to be admitted due to the life-threatening complications. Pregnant women are urged to get the flu vaccine to protect themselves and their unborn babies. Contracting the illness while pregnant can cause a baby to be born prematurely or have a low birth weight. It may also lead to stillbirth or death. As high levels of flu circulated in recent months, the National Maternity Hospital said 33 pregnant women were diagnosed with the illness. A spokesman said the first case was on November 21 and most were in December, with three so far in January.

Assistance for cyclists climbing one of Norway' s steep hills. On my first run up the hill I was letting the puck which pushes your right foot get away from me , and this wasn't assisted by my lack of familiarity with the bike The lift could also perhaps be criticised on the grounds of not being inclusive.

I did this on my previous bike , and while it was a lot of fun (and I enjoyed riding the resulting bike ) it was also quite expensive, almost half the cost of the bike . You should also be prepared to put in a fair amount of research to determine if all the parts will work together.

Keeping rides comfortable

Heated handlebar grips are commonplace among snowmobiles and some motorbikes, and heated grips for bicycles for installation by the owner have been available to purchase for years.

Halfords had previously announced a range of connected bicycles equipped with Amazon's Alexa digital assistant for hands-free navigation and Wi-Fi access.

A small screen embedded in the bike's handlebars displays performance data, including speed, time and distance covered, adjustable light settings for cycling in low-light conditions and GPS and mapping services.

Speaking aloud to the bike enables riders to ask the voice-controlled assistant for turn-by-turn directions, send dictated messages and create lists.

The hybrid Cybic Legend and electric Cybic E-Legend bikes, which were displayed at CES, the world's largest technology showcase in Las Vegas last year, also feature an HD music player, a Vodafone SIM card with three years' worth of free 3G data and the ability to connect to Wi-Fi.
