One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: 'It was obviously a tragic accident but she should've handed herself in.'

It is unclear where the Sacoolas family have now moved but they boast an impressive property portfolio. They are currently renting out a home set within a beautiful forest in Vienna, Virginia, which they were living in until they moved to the UK.

The couple bought the four-bedroom, three-bathroom house, which has its own outdoor swimming pool, for £650,000 in 2015.

It is now worth an estimated £700,000 and was put up for rent in June 2019 – shortly before the Sacoolas family moved to the UK –for £3,000 a month.

The young family had previously owned another large detached home in Reston, Virginia, which they sold for £450,000 in 2015.

Mrs Sacoolas's lawyers did not respond to a request for comment last night.
