The rightwing nationalist Alternative for Germany ( AfD ) suffered its first split just a day after scoring a stunning success in Germany’s elections, as leader Frauke Petry said she would not sit with the party in the Bundestag. But the initiative was soundly rejected by the rest of the party .

A leader of the Alternative for Germany ( AfD ) has backtracked on comments calling for the far-right party to consider the possibility of splitting . The AfD 's leadership has called for the group to dissolve itself. A resolution unanimously adopted by the AfD federal board on Monday said Meuthen

Jörg Meuthen's thought game of separating the various wings of the AfD failed. The federal executive has brought the party chairman back on line.

With his considerations about a possible division of the party, AfD boss Jörg Meuthen has offended many AfD officials. Now the federal executive board whistled him back.

Meuthen admitted that he had "made a big mistake" with his push, the party said after a conference call this Monday. "It is committed to the unity of the AfD as a unified party and confirms that it will only act together in this way." The Federal Executive Board welcomes this clarification. At the same time, the governing body opposed any attempt to endanger the unity of the party.

Alexander Gauland, leader of the anti-immigrant AfD party , said he was not aware of the speech made by Hitler. German historians have condemned an article written by the leader of the rightwing populist Alternative für Deutschland party for its “striking parallels” to the words of Adolf Hitler.

Meuthen had suggested last Wednesday to speak "open-ended" about whether, given the great ideological differences, it would be better not to split the party into a "liberal-conservative" and a "socio-patriotic" wing. "We should discuss this in peace, but then will come to a decision by the end of the year ," he said.

AfD parliamentary group leader Alexander Gauland called Meuthen's considerations "not very expedient and extremely apolitical". The military motto "march separately, strike together" presupposes a unified leadership and exactly eliminate Meuthen now, said Gauland on Thursday.

Co-Group leader Alice Weidel warned: "We are facing groundbreaking elections next year". If the AfD breaks down into its individual parts beforehand, "we have gambled away everything that has been built up in recent years".

The 2020 Conservative Party of Canada leadership election will be held at an as-yet-undetermined date and location to choose a successor to Andrew Scheer

If a party split looks unlikely before the German federal elections on 24 September, preparations behind the scenes suggest it is not entirely off the cards. Two separate political foundations tied to the AfD have recently been registered in Germany: the Desiderius Erasmus Foundation

The spokesman for the right-wing national AfD network “Flügel” , the Thuringian AfD country chief Björn Höcke, wrote on Facebook that the discussion that Meuthen initiated was “foolish and irresponsible”.

Höcke and the Brandenburg AfD head of state Andreas Kalbitz recently announced that the influential “wing” would dissolve by the end of April. That was what the federal executive board of the AfD had asked for. Thuringian constitutional protection considers this step to be a "fog candle".

AfD in survey depth

This fact could be an explanation for Meuthen's advance, the Bremen-based political scientist Lothar Probst believes. Meuthen's calculation was clear.

"In view of the impending danger of the entire AfD being monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which would have far-reaching consequences for many members and could lead to a wave of withdrawals, he wants to save the more right-wing conservative, liberal part of the party," Probst told Handelsblatt.

AfD: Party leadership removes state board in Saarland

AfD: Party leadership removes state board in Saarland © Oliver Dietze / dpa The AfD federal board removes the head of the state party in Saarland around Josef Dörr. • The Saarland AfD state association is initially to be headed by an emergency board. • The Saar Regional Association has been highly controversial in the AfD for years. • The AfD in Baden-Württemberg excluded the member of the state parliament, Räpple.

Party leader Joerg Meuthen said the 66-year-old was 'beaten almost to death' in a 'cowardly and sickening' attack. Bremen police said they believe the attack was politically motivated and called for witnesses to the incident, which took place around 5.20pm on Monday near a theatre in central Bremen.

The United States federal executive departments are the principal units of the executive branch of the federal government of the United States.

Meuthen knew, of course, that the formal dissolution of the "wing" was just a "big deception" that only served to escape surveillance by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. "Because if the wing gradually dissolves in the AfD without giving up or losing its decisive influence there, then there is exactly the risk of radicalization, which could lead to the entire party being monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution."

Meuthen's initiative has not resulted in the result brought a lot. In any case, he could not stop the radicalization of the party to the right. In addition, disagreements about direction within the party are generally not well received by voters. Especially since other issues dominate in the corona crisis.

This is also reflected in surveys. In the latest RTL / ntv “trend barometer”, the AfD is only 9 percent, while the government parties can grow. The SPD therefore moved past the Greens in second place for the first time since September 2018 and now comes to 17 percent (Greens: 16 percent). CDU and CSU remain clearly in first place, gaining one point and now standing at 37 percent.
