BOEING-737-MAX-FAA: Boeing 737 MAX certification flights completed

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The American Civil Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Wednesday that it has completed the 737 MAX certification flights with Boeing, a major step towards the return to service of the aircraft, grounded since March 2019 following two accidents that killed 346 people in the space of five months.

The FAA clarified that it still had to analyze the data from the flights made during the three days of testing and perform other tasks.

In a press release, it stated that it was following a specific process and that it would take "the time necessary to scrutinize the work of Boeing".

"We will lift the no-fly only when FAA safety experts are certain that the aircraft meets certification standards," she added.

Boeing declined to comment, referring to the FAA press release.

A report by the Inspector General of the United States Department of Transport, which Reuters learned of on Tuesday, highlights the shortcomings of Boeing in the presentation to the FAA of the changes made to the 737 MAX, particularly in relation to the anti-stall system of the device, the MCAS, implicated in the fatal accidents in Ethiopia and Indonesia.

Following these accidents, Boeing began to develop several updates to the aircraft software.

The flights made this week to test the modifications made to the automatic flight control system constitute a turning point for Boeing, which is going through the greatest crisis in its history.

According to scientists, the most active volcano in the world, located in the south of the country, is preparing for its next eruption. The first since 2011. Its name: Grímsvötn . The Boeing 737 MAX is the fourth generation of the Boeing 737 , a narrow-body airliner manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA). It succeeds the Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG).

The Boeing 737 Max has been seen performing re- certification test flights , one of which was caught on video. The ill-fated jet has been grounded worldwide since March 2019, after it was involved in two fatal crashes caused by an issue in the plane’s anti-stall system

In addition to the analysis of flight test data, the FAA must validate the new pilot training procedures, among other things, and should not authorize the resumption of commercial flights of the 737 MAX before mid-September, learned this Reuters week from sources.

If this were to happen, the aircraft could resume service in the United States before the end of the year and end a soap opera that has stretched over time, due to multiple delays.

The 737 MAX crisis cost Boeing more than $ 18 billion, disrupted production and disrupted supply chains. The American aircraft manufacturer dismissed its general manager Dennis Muilenburg last December.

A series of criminal and parliamentary investigations are still in progress.
