LIBYA-MIGRANTS: At least 45 migrants perished in a shipwreck in the Mediterranean
GENEVA (Reuters) - At least 45 African migrants and refugees have perished in the Mediterranean in what constitutes the worst shipwreck since the start of the year off the Libyan coast, two UN agencies said on Wednesday.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IMO), in a statement about this shipwreck that occurred on Monday, call for an increase in search and rescue capacities to respond to distress calls.
"Some 37 survivors, mainly from Senegal, Mali, Chad and Ghana, were rescued by local fishermen before being arrested when they disembarked," the statement said.
"They reported to IMO staff that 45 others, including five children, were killed when the boat's engine exploded off Zouara."
This shipwreck brings to at least 320 the number of migrants and refugees who have died off Libya since the beginning of this year, say the UNHCR and the IMO.
