The Malian State celebrates, on September 22, the 60th anniversary of its independence. On June 20, 1960 in Dakar, the French colors gave way to those of a new state: the Federation of Mali, which included two former colonies of French West Africa, French Sudan and Senegal .

It is first of all the Dakar assembly which votes for the independence of Senegal as a single entity on August 20, 1960. Léopold Senghor then becomes the first president of the Republic of Senegal.

A month later, French Sudan in turn proclaimed its independence and under the leadership of Modibo Keïta, the Republic of Mali was born on September 22, 1960.
