The virologist Christian Drosten , ex-soccer professional Thomas Hitzlsperger and the actress Sandra Hüller are awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will honor 13 other citizens on October 1st. "The seven women and eight men have made outstanding contributions: They help to cope with the corona pandemic, promote the convergence of East and West and contribute to breaking down prejudices in our society," said the Office of the Federal President.

The honorees include the scientist Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim, known for her YouTube channel, the writer Ingo Schulze and the pianist Igor Levit . The motto of the award ceremony on the Day of German Unity is "United and there for one another".

Heckler & Koch stops awarding assault rifles for the time being .
