The state of Maryland is not messing around with its social distancing measures. Shawn Marshall Myers, 42, has just been sentenced to one year in prison for hosting two parties at his home.

At the end of March, the police are called to intervene in a house in Hughesville, in southern Maryland. It was reported to them that one evening was attended by a large number of people, when at that time Governor Larry Hogan banned gatherings of more than ten people in the state.

The police then discover on the spot that about 50 people are participating in a rally around a campfire. After protesting to the police, Myers finally agrees to comply with the state of emergency and cancel his event.

Very severe sanction

After refusing to cancel his rally this time, Myers is arrested. Seven months later, the sanction against him is particularly severe. In more than a year in prison, Myers is ordered to pay 5,000 dollars in fine (4,298 euros) and will remain on probation for three years after his release.

To justify himself, State Attorney Tony Covington said to NBC Washington that "these decisions are made for the good of the public, for the safety of all. We have 200,000 people dead from the attitudes Mr. Myers had on both occasions ”.

Today, the Maryland government allows gatherings of up to 50 people.
