Researchers from the Pasteur Institute in Lille confirmed on Tuesday, September 29, that they had found an effective molecule against Covid-19. This drug, already on the market, has been tested among 2,000 others for five months. No, it's not about hydroxychloroquine.

After conclusive tests, researchers from the Institut Pasteur of Lille indicated on Tuesday, September 29, that they were optimistic that would find an effective drug in the face of Covid-19.

The team’s research project relied on testing more than 2,000 molecules to find one that could be used to design a drug against the coronavirus.

Clearly renewed speed , the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc in the Old Continent and elsewhere in the world. The pandemic has infected more than 5 million people in Europe since last December, when the first contaminations took place in China.

"We have demonstrated in vitro (in the laboratory) that a molecule present in the active principle of an existing drug is active against the coronavirus. We tested it on human lung cells and the results were very promising ", told the Voix du Nord Prof. Benoît Déprez, scientific director of the Institut Pasteur de Lille (IPL).

The name of the molecule kept secret

A single molecule has been shown to work until the end. And it's not , hydroxychloroquine . "This molecule came out positive during the first screens, but it did not hold up on more complex models, which shows the limits of its clinical efficacy", indicates one of the researchers at 20 minutes .

For now, the name of the molecule remains secret, to " avoid any frenzy." If this works, its production will be increased calmly and not on the basis of wild demand ", adds Prof. Benoit Déprez to La Voix du Nord.

According to the researchers, "The experience with this product is sufficient to know that it can be effective with the normal dosage administered, both in children and in adults. And warnings about side effects are rare ”.

Five million euros are missing

There is still a pitfall to be overcome, financial this one. The Institut Pasteur does not have sufficient financial means to carry out additional clinical trials on around 100 patients. "For the moment, it is the lack of funding that is the obstacle," told a member of the research team to 20 minutes.

Five million euros would be missing to complete the clinical trial phase. Aid has been sought from the state which, "has not shown much interest so far".

If successful, access to this treatment against the coronavirus is planned for "early 2021".
