US News More than an emergency solution: How Lichte wants to save Mainz 05
Deep cracks in Mainz - Beierlorzer hard to hold
After Achim Beierlorzer's dismissal, the previous assistant coach Jan-Moritz Lichte moves up at Mainz 05. SPORT1 introduces the coach who is coming into focus for the first time.
When Jan-Moritz Lichte was in charge of training for the 05 professionals on November 12, 2019, he was surrounded by a decimated group.
Many players had left for international matches after the defeat by Union Berlin and the separation from Sandro Schwarz. Lichte seemed very relaxed in his role. With one hand in his pocket and the other calm gestures in the air, he talked a lot with the players.
"In rain, sun or hail": My Hertha, my life, my bus stop
Hertha against Frankfurt: In the Tagesspiegel column "Station of my life" our author writes about the bus stop at the Olympiastadion. A declaration of love. © Photo: André Görke Hertha's stop. The Flatowallee at the Olympic Stadium. This stop is the lowest point. Left goes up the mountain, right goes up the mountain. And in the back stands the Olympic Stadium. Yes, that too is on a mountain. This stop on Heerstrasse is called “Flatowallee”, and I've been standing here all my life.
When the team started ten days later in Hoffenheim, he was already back in the second row and Achim Beierlorzer, as the successor to Sandro Schwarz, achieved a brilliant 5-1 victory.
At that time there was hope that the unconventional decision made by the association for the teacher who had been dismissed just days earlier in Cologne could be the right one.Lichte can imagine "permanent solution"
Ten months, one relegation and one player revolt later, the middle Franconian is history for the 05ers. The club has to deal with the pressing questions of what went wrong and why, above all internally, and draw the right conclusions from them.
The new head coach, about whose whereabouts in this role initially no statement was made, tries to free himself from all this and to concentrate on the content. It was important to him to first develop a defensive structure with the team in order to finally get fewer goals, he explained at the press conference at which he was presented. Because with defeats the mood in and around the club will not change.

Together with Michael Falkenmayer, Jan-Moritz Lichte, who played at the league level himself, became assistant coach under Sandro Schwarz in the summer of 2017. A role that he had previously played in Paderborn and St. Pauli under André Schubert, in Hanover under Michael Frontzeck and in Leverkusen with Sami Hyypiä and Sascha Lewandowski.
In Leverkusen, sports director Rudi Völler described him as a "highly talented trainer" and had him on the list in 2013 as a possible successor to Lewandowski when he went back to the youngsters. Lichte has been patiently answering questions about his role as co-worker for years: The position has many advantages, but he also has more confidence.
His statements at PK are accordingly self-confident: The new task is difficult, at least demanding, under the current circumstances, and he is well advised to take it step by step, but: "In principle, I can imagine the permanent solution. "
first aid: this is how it works!
© Getty Images / EyeEm It is best to refresh your first aid knowledge regularly. How did that work again with the stable side position? What does CABD mean again? Which song do you have to have in your ear during a heart massage? You don't know? Then it is high time for a little first aid refresher. 1. Stay calm In the event of an accident, your own behavior can save lives. Even when everything is in chaos, you have to try to stay calm.
Lichte relies on the self-knowledge of the team
It would be a mistake to underestimate the coach anyway, just because he neither pushed into the front row nor sought the public. The Baunataler knows exactly what he wants, regardless of the position he holds. He has a good rapport with his players, which does not mean that he is afraid to speak plain text.
The fact that the team is now considered to be difficult is "due to itself", Lichte analyzes. At the same time, he emphasizes that he told the players in the morning that he wanted to take them as they are, with all good and bad qualities. Everyone should check what they can bring to the team.
At the same time, the 40-year-old praised the quality of his staff. As head coach, he will certainly focus on other character traits and "do the job as I am". He has already done that once when Sandro Schwarz watched the game in Paderborn yellow-red-blocked in the bus in the 2019/2020 season. At that time, Lichte summed up: "I didn't have the feeling that I was out of place."
Before his engagement in Mainz, he last headed the youth department at Hannover 96. Because he felt he had exhausted his possibilities there and the conversations with the 05 managers gave him "a good feeling in terms of interpersonal and content", it was an easy decision to improve their reputation to follow.

Light an emergency solution? Schröder rejects that.
The experience with the young players can help him in integrating the NLZ talents as well as the work at a location like Leverkusen was preparatory for the new role. In terms of self-assessment, he says: "I've worked with great head coaches, from whom I learned a lot."
The assumption that Lichte is an emergency solution because nothing else is financially feasible with Schwarz and Beierlorzer on the payroll, Rouven Schröder clearly rejected and emphasized: "The head coach is the most important employee of a club." The role must be filled accordingly responsibly.
It may also have spoken for Jan-Moritz Lichte that a certain Stefan Hofmann sat in his course as a football teacher, which he completed as the best of his year in 2011. It can be assumed that the chairman of the board of Mainz 05 has thrown his sporting assessment into the balance.
Lichte himself once said that the exciting thing about working as a coach is "the opportunity to see football in a bigger way." Now he has the opportunity to show his view of football.
