Opposition leader Diallo had announced on Monday in front of supporters and journalists that he was inviting his "peace and justice" loving fellow citizens to remain vigilant and "to defend this democratic victory". Official results of the vote on Sunday were not yet available at this time. The Vice-President of the Electoral Authority, Bakary Mansare, called Diallo's announcement invalid.

Opposition politician Diallo is one of Condé's longstanding opponents. He lost the presidential election in 2010 and 2015 against Condé.

In March, the controversial president pushed through a constitutional amendment by referendum. According to the interpretation of the ruling party RPG, the new constitution enables Condé to have another term of office. So far, the presidents were only allowed two terms of office in the West African country.
