The French president spoke on Tuesday to his Russian counterpart and "wished for a strengthening of Franco-Russian cooperation in the fight against terrorism and illegal immigration", after the assassination of Samuel Paty, on October 16, by a young Russian man of Chechen origin.

Condolences of Putin

For its part, the Russian presidency indicated that, during a telephone call, Vladimir Poutine had "sent his condolences about the terrorist attack of October 16 in the suburbs of Paris, the barbaric murder of a French professor ”.

“In this context, the two parties reaffirmed their mutual interest in intensifying joint efforts to fight terrorism and the spread of extremist ideology” , added the Kremlin.

On Saturday, the Russian Embassy in Paris underlined that the 18-year-old Chechen assailant , accused of having beheaded Samuel Paty, had no longer any links with Moscow since 2008.
