Covid-19 - Reinfections: a handful of cases, a multitude of questions
© THOMAS KIENZLE Covid test in Stuttgart, Germany on October 13, 2020 It is now a certainty: you can catch Covid-19 twice , and even get sicker the second time around. These cases of reinfection are still very rare but raise many questions about immunity and the outcome of the pandemic.
The government has put online a new version of the application, after the failure of StopCovid, insufficiently adopted by the French.
After a first application, StopCovid, which did not have the expected effectiveness, the government launched Thursday, October 22 a new application for monitoring contact cases to fight against the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. Called TousAntiCovid, it is already available for iOS and Android smartphones. For people who have already downloaded StopCovid, a simple update will automatically transform it into TousAntiCovid.
The latest Covid figures show a "worrying" spread to the elderly
© Copyright 2020, L'Obs The Covid-19 epidemic continues to spread "from the youngest to the oldest", observes this Friday, October 16 Public health France, deeming this development "very worrying", while the times for screening tests tend to improve. People aged 15 to 44 are still the most affected, with 278 new cases of contamination per 100,000 inhabitants, against 180 per 100,000 on average for all age groups, according to its latest epidemiological bulletin which covers data.
This new version does not represent a revolution compared to the previous one, but features have been added to encourage the French to download and activate it.The core of the application remains the same
TousAntiCovid is an application used to warn its user if he has been in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19, using Bluetooth technology. For it to be effective, therefore, activate Bluetooth on your phone, then launch the application, activate tracking and then leave it open.
Two people are considered to have been in contact if they have been at a distance of less than one meter for a period of at least fifteen minutes, and both have activated the TousAntiCovid application . If a user tests positive, they can report it in the app, and everyone who has activated it and has been in contact with them will be notified. "This alert allows the user to be screened as a priority, just like a contact person identified by doctors or health insurance," explains the Ministry of Health on its site.
Covid-19: Clusters involved in less than 10% of contamination
According to Public Health France, cases linked to clusters represent less than 10% of contamination. © Reuters Are clusters a determining factor in the explosion of cases of Covid-19 contamination? According to Public Health France, less than 10% of positive cases are linked to one of them, which tends to demonstrate the importance of barrier gestures and social distancing at all times, and not only in cases of large gatherings.
Certificate of exit and advice in the event of symptoms
To encourage the French to download TousAntiCovid, additional features have been added. For example, it is possible to access, directly from the application, a link to the derogatory certificate required to travel after 9 p.m. in territories which have imposed a curfew.
The application also contains information tools: it is possible to access the latest figures relating to the pandemic in France, but also to usage data, such as the number of TousAntiCovid users and the number of notifications sent to contact cases.
There are also links to two services: "My Covid advice", a questionnaire at the end of which personalized advice is given to people with symptoms, and Covid screening, a "map of updated screening and with information on waiting times reported by users, ”indicates the Ministry of Health on its site. Indeed, it is now possible, if we geolocate not far from a screening center, to assess the waiting time to be tested there: from "low" (less than 30 minutes) to " high ”(over an hour).
Covid-19: Spain crosses the million case mark, a first in Europe

Country among the most bereaved in Europe, Spain officially became on Wednesday the first EU member to cross the milestone of one million coronavirus cases. To stem the second wave of the epidemic, the country is preparing for new measures. This is a record that Spain would have done well.
No European interoperability
In June, the Member States of the European Union agreed to promote interoperability of applications for monitoring contact cases at European level. The goal is that applications launched by different states can communicate with each other, so as not to force a Spaniard traveling to Germany, for example, to download and activate the German application.
This interoperability was deployed Monday in several countries including Germany, Italy and Ireland. “TousAntiCovid”, like “StopCovid”, will not be compatible with this infrastructure, and the health ministry invites cross-border French people to download applications from the two countries in which they live and / or work. The government took note of the failure of StopCovid
On October 14, during an interview with France 2 and TF1, the Head of State noted the failure of the first StopCovid application, which was to facilitate the detection and follow-up of contact cases after confinement. "It did not work," said Emmanuel Macron, acknowledging that the French application for smartphones had been "much less downloaded" than in other European countries where a similar device had been put in place. "No one has succeeded in making [it] a real warning tool," he added.
StopCovid has only been installed about 2.7 million times since its launch in early June. This is much less than the UK and German apps, downloaded 16 million and 20 million times respectively. In France to date, 800 people have received a notification indicating that they had been in contact with a person who tested positive. Across the Rhine and the Channel, however, the authorities have not communicated on the number of contact cases reported through their system.
