This victory ends a painful period for Bolivia, after elections at the end of last year which were marked by disputed allegations of fraud, violent protests, looting and blockades, and which ultimately prompted Evo Morales to resign.

"Now our big challenge is to rebuild our homeland in peace, to find joy, stability and hope for a better future for all Bolivians," Luis Arce said on social media.

Luis Arce, who was Minister of Economy in the government of Evo Morales, was then seen as a moderating voice. He told Reuters that Evo Morales would have no role in his administration.
