MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said he wanted to strike a government-to-government deal on a coronavirus vaccine to limit the risk of corruption, adding Manila would not beg other nations for access to the vaccine.
The Philippines, with its 108 million people and one of the highest rates of COVID-19 infections in Asia, is considered suitable for clinical trials and one of the biggest markets for global vaccine manufacturers.
"I want to say that we will not beg, we will pay," Rodrigo Duterte said in a televised address.
"In the Chinese government, look no further for partners, we can make a government-to-government agreement," he added.
With more than 371,630 confirmed cases and 7,039 epidemic-related deaths, the Philippines has the second-highest rate of coronavirus infections and deaths in Southeast Asia, behind Indonesia.
