Who will be the next US president will be decided in a few US states. In many of the 50 states, the same party always wins, but about a dozen are highly competitive. In the election on November 3rd, eyes will be on these "battleground states" or "swing states". The Republican Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden also campaigned for votes there in the final spurt of the election campaign.

The US President is not directly elected. The votes of the voters decide on the composition of the electoral college that ultimately elects the president. To win an election, a candidate needs the votes of at least 270 of the 538 voters. Because of Corona, it is expected that many more people will vote by postal vote. This is why experts sometimes expect results to be delayed. In at least three states (Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan), which together have 46 voters, officials believe that counting delays are possible. It could be until Friday.

How are the voters appointed, who then choose the President of the United States?

How are the voters appointed, who then choose the President of the United States? On November 3, the citizens of the United States are called to vote to elect the President of the United States. But unlike the French poll, this is an indirect election. On November 3, American voters are called to vote, indirectly, for the future American president. Formally, it is in fact the 538 voters, elected state by state, who will lead, on December 19, to the election of the 45th President of the United States.

Florida

With 29 voters, Florida is one of the most highly contested states. In 2016, Trump just won there. Current polls suggest a head-to-head race. Biden is just ahead in most of the surveys. Postal voting documents can be counted there days before the election, which is why it is likely that the result will be announced soon. The polling stations are open from 1:00 p.m. CET Tuesday to 2:00 a.m. CET Wednesday.

Pennsylvania

In the 2016 election, Trump narrowly prevailed in Pennsylvania. Surveys currently give Biden a good chance of securing the 20 electorate - but it could be tight. Postal voting documents may only be recorded and counted on election day. Therefore, there is likely to be a delay in the announcement of the results. The polling stations are open from Tuesday 1:00 p.m. CET to Wednesday 2:00 a.m. CET.
